Quick answer: A spherical roller bearing is a double-row, self-aligning rolling-element bearing that carries heavy radial and axial loads even when the shaft is misaligned. Most premature failures come from six preventable causes — contamination, lubrication starvation, corrosion, misalignment, overload and electrical arcing. Each is avoided with correct sealing, a disciplined relubrication schedule, the right cage material and sizing from the real load case instead of the shaft diameter alone.
It is a double-row bearing with barrel-shaped rollers running on a common spherical raceway, so it self-aligns and tolerates shaft deflection under heavy loads. Typical applications include mining equipment, paper mills, gearboxes and vibratory machinery. SINO BEARINGS (KMK brand) manufactures them in chrome steel with brass or steel cages.
Six failure modes dominate: contamination, lubrication starvation, corrosion, misalignment, overload and electrical arcing. Lubrication and contamination together cause the majority of premature failures, which is why sealing and relubrication discipline matter more than any other maintenance step.
Follow the lubrication interval for your speed, temperature and load conditions, and always use the correct grease grade. Wrong or insufficient grease creates metal-to-metal contact — the fastest route to raceway damage. In severe conditions (heat, vibration, dust), shorten the interval rather than guessing.
Dirt entering through poor seals scores the raceways. Use 2RS sealed bearings in dusty environments and keep the assembly area clean — especially in mining, paper mills, gearboxes and vibratory equipment.
In humid or chemically aggressive service, specify chrome steel with a brass or steel cage instead of plain steel components, and keep moisture out of the housing to avoid rust and pitting. For washdown or food environments, stainless steel variants are the safer choice.
The common spherical raceway lets the bearing self-align, so moderate shaft deflection does not overload a single row. Choose self-aligning types where deflection is expected; where it is not, ensure precise mounting, because misalignment overloads one side of the bearing.
Size from the actual load case — magnitude, direction and duty cycle — not just the shaft diameter. Exceeding the dynamic load rating causes early fatigue spalling, one of the most expensive failure modes to repair in the field.
Shaft currents etch fluting patterns into raceways. In motor-driven equipment, fit insulated (hybrid ceramic) spherical roller bearings: their ceramic rolling elements block the current path and prevent fluting damage entirely.
